Model of Care staff training
Experts by Experience are working with professionals from Derbyshire Healthcare who are developing their New Model of Care staff training. This training will be delivered to approximately 900 staff between September and November 2024.
The training focuses on three areas:
a) Establishing and delivering a purposeful admission to hospital
b) Trauma informed care on in-patient wards
c) Using sensory interventions to decrease distress
Shelagh, Expert by Experience has shared her insights into personal admissions into hospital via a recorded interview with Niki from Mental Health Together. This 15 minute video clip is being used in the Purposeful Admissions training.
Shelagh shared:
'"It was interesting to reflect on my time in hospital and to see just how much needs to change.
It felt good to think that my work with Niki and Paul could be influential in changing attitudes and improving the experience of patients and staff on the wards."
It has not been possible to give Expert input into the other training workstreams because of very tight time schedules. Co-production work takes time! |

Co-production Training at Community Mental Health Team Away Day
We were delighted to be invited to spend time with the High Peak community mental health team recently. Apart from the fact it was a beautiful day in Hartington, it was great to help staff think about how they can include the patient voice more in their service. We were impressed with their enthusiasm to learn and take steps in the right direction.
Here are a few words from our two carer Experts who kindly gave their time to assist with the staff training.
"It was amazing to be in the same room as the CMHT team who had been treating my son for the past 20 years. I am hopeful we can move forward together in more of a joint partnership than previously." Rose, Expert Carer
'"It was wonderful to meet the team and be a part of their away day. The opportunity to be both listened to and to hear about their experiences felt good and was very valuable. That shared conversation is so necessary and important. I feel optimistic about us working together, in partnership, to help to provide the services that my son and others need." Jean, Expert Carer
Niki Glazier, Engagement Service Lead at Mental Health Together says: Co-production has been a buzz word for a while now and it's not easy to achieve. But every team can take some steps to improve the ways that they listen to their clients' views and wishes. They can also start to be more pro-active in seeking those views rather than just waiting for comments or complaints. Steps along the way to gaining enough confidence to start co-designing aspects of services together.
Helpful resources are on the Co-production Framework page including a Co-production video with Mental Health Together Expert Nina.
