Derbyshire Healthcare's CEO meets with Experts
Recently, Mark Powell, Chief Executive Officer of Derbyshire Healthcare met with Mental Health Together Experts at our Peer Support meeting.
Mark heard what matters most to Experts with different backgrounds of lived experiences. Discussions included:
- How the Trust will increase it's commitment to co-production so that those who use their services will be able to influence service design and delivery. The NHS England Culture of Care Standards for mental health in-patient services outline the core commitment of involving lived experience at all levels. Mark will continue to update Mental Health Together directly and return to the meeting in the first half of 2025.
- How people are able to get help for themselves and others in crisis. The Derbyshire Mental Health 24-hour Helpline was particularly mentioned on this topic and MHT gave insights from Expert's sharing experiences that the service was operating on a 'call back' service since the Summer. We asked for clarity on this and we are meeting with the service leads.
- NHS Change Consultation: Mark shared the Government's 10-year health plan consultation 'NHS Change'. There is very little within this on mental health. More on this below.
Both our Experts and Mark found the discussion very helpful, and Mark has asked to come back again in the first half of 2025. We appreciate the fact that Mark has already reported back on the actions which he took away from the meeting. |

Purposeful Admissions to hospital
Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is preparing its staff to deliver a New Model of Care on its in-patient units.
Earlier this Autumn Mental Health Together connected with Paul Blakeman, Clinical Educator leading the staff training on this particular topic.
Paul was keen to involve the voice of lived experience but had little time available to enable it. Fortunately for him we had a wonderful Expert, Shelagh, who was willing to reflect on her own in-patient experiences and provide some great insights as to what 'purposeful' might feel like and what changes are needed.
The training is currently being delivered and should eventually be received by some 900 members of staff. We have received some feedback form the Trust's Lead Educator on this topic which speaks for itself really! |

Government's 10 year plan consultation 'NHS Change'
The government's 'Change NHS' plan lacks focus on mental health and may scrap vital safeguards.
Rethink Mental Illness urges you to tell your MP to protect mental health funding and have created a quick and easy way to do this. Fill out Rethink's digital form to generate a letter to your MP.
Rethink has written to the Prime Minister seeking clarification on reports that the Mental Health Investment Standard (MHIS) could be axed. The recent Plan for Change, prioritises reducing some NHS waiting times but excludes mental health.
NHS Change online national questionnaire is a consultation open until mid February to hear people's views, experiences and ideas as part of this engagement to help shape the 10 Year Health Plan for England.
The ICB and Healthwatch Derbyshire and Derby are creating a Derbyshire based engagement approach of which we will share more details early 2025. |

EQUAL Forum's achievement
Recently, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust held their annual HEARTS staff awards ceremony at Kingsway Hospital, Derby.
Experts and professionals working with MHT would like to share their brilliant news. The winner of the Making a Difference Award was awarded to EQUAL for making a positive difference to the lives of the people we serve day to day by taking initiative without being prompted, demonstrating exceptional reliability and a willingness to help, and embodying the Trust's values: Respect, Honesty, People First and Do your Best.
EQUAL is Derbyshire Healthcare's feedback network. If you have used any service at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS, either as a service user or carer, you can become involves.
Being part of EQUAL will give you the opportunity to discuss what you believe to be working well and what could be improved. With opportunity to share and feedback these discussions with the Trusts executive leadership team, EQUAL teams are looking to set up more groups across the Trusts services. If you are interested, please email dhcft.equal@nhs.net

Men Walking and Talking starting 2nd January 2025
My name is Mike, I’m 27 and I’m the walk leader for MWAT Long Eaton. I was originally a part of the Quinton MWAT group, however after moving to Long Eaton, quickly realised how important that group was to me.
I grew up, like a lot of men, being told that “men don’t cry” and “men shouldn’t show emotion, they’re strong”, but when my dad passed away in 2021, things took a dark turn and I didn’t know what to do. I bottled everything up.
Suddenly I found myself somewhere I had never been before, a deep depression, and it wasn’t until my wife had told me there was a “walking and talking” group specifically for men that I’d realised just how bad things had gotten.
